ProFantasy Software’s Fractal Terrains Pro world-building software allows you to import real-world data to create a global relief map of Earth.
- Visit the the ETOPO2 dataset and download the "ETOPO2.dos.bin" (~111MB)
- Rename "ETOPO2.dos.bin" to "ETOPO2.bin"
- Download the ETOPO2.hdr file on this page
- Copy both files to a new folder within your Fractal Terrains installation (e.g., "/FT/EarthMaps/")
- Open Fractal Terrains
- Select File -> New -> Binary File
- Click NEXT
- Choose Elevation File
- In the File Name field, browse to the ETOPO2.bin file
- Click OPEN
- You should get a pop-up that says “An info file was found along with the data file. Use it?”
- Click YES
- The Binary Data dialogue should automatically fill with the parms from the ETOPO2.hdr file
- Click OK
- The path to the bin file should appear in the Binary Data box
- Click NEXT
- Click FINISH
- FT will render the map
Once the map is rendered in FT, you can do whatever you want - raise the sea levels to create a post-apocalypse world, create giant craters to represent impact with a comet, change the weather, rainfall, whatever.
