ProFantasy Software’s Fractal Terrains Pro world-building software allows you to import real-world data to create a global relief map of Earth.

  1. Visit the the ETOPO2 dataset and download the "ETOPO2.dos.bin" (~111MB)
  2. Rename "ETOPO2.dos.bin" to "ETOPO2.bin"
  3. Download the ETOPO2.hdr file on this page
  4. Copy both files to a new folder within your Fractal Terrains installation (e.g., "/FT/EarthMaps/")
  5. Open Fractal Terrains
  6. Select File -> New -> Binary File
  7. Click NEXT
  8. Choose Elevation File
  9. In the File Name field, browse to the ETOPO2.bin file
  10. Click OPEN
  11. You should get a pop-up that says “An info file was found along with the data file. Use it?”
  12. Click YES
  13. The Binary Data dialogue should automatically fill with the parms from the ETOPO2.hdr file
  14. Click OK
  15. The path to the bin file should appear in the Binary Data box
  16. Click NEXT
  17. Click FINISH
  18. FT will render the map

Once the map is rendered in FT, you can do whatever you want - raise the sea levels to create a post-apocalypse world, create giant craters to represent impact with a comet, change the weather, rainfall, whatever.
